Ivy R. Ashe

Hello!

Ashe_bio_photo

I am an Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism at Florida Atlantic University, where I research media and geography, tourism and journalism, and visual journalism. As a former community news reporter and photographer, I am deeply invested in research that investigates the role journalism plays in structuring sense of place. I received my Ph.D. in Journalism and Media from the University of Texas at Austin. My dissertation focused on the framing practices and processes of American travel media, specifically their contribution to the creation of aspirational and consumer-friendly places.

I currently teach Photojournalism, Multimedia Journalism, and Sports Communication, and am working with fellow department members to develop a core multimedia production course. While at UT, I taught science journalism and multimedia journalism fundamentals to non-majors from across campus. I was a teaching assistant in photography, video reporting, and sports media classes, and worked with Undergraduate Learning Assistants as part of my job with the Center for Advancing Teaching Excellence.

I earned my Master of Arts in photojournalism from the University of Missouri- Columbia, and hold a B.A. in Linguistics and Hispanic Studies from Rice University. Prior to entering my Ph.D. program, I worked for the Vineyard Gazette in Edgartown, Mass., and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald in Hilo, Hawaii, where my work was recognized multiple times by the New England Newspaper and Press Association and the Hawaii Society of Professional Journalists, respectively.

I keep my photography skills sharp by shooting 35mm film with a Canon Rebel 2000. You can see some of those photos here. Outside of academia, you can find me crafting, drinking coffee, or bouldering.
